Q. My employee has been sick for 4 days, do they need a fit note?

No. If someone is off sick for 7 calendar days or less (including weekends), they do not need to provide you with a fit note. They can tell you they’re not well enough to work without medical evidence and should still be paid the amount of sick pay they’re entitled to according to their contract of employment or you sickness absence policy.

Once an employee has taken over 7 days off work, they need to send you a Fit Note from their GP or a registered health professional,  to confirm the details of their sickness.

However, Statutory Sick Pay is payable from day 4 of the sickness absence.
