Q. Do apprentices have the same rights as employees? 

Apprenticeships are a great way to get work experience while training and studying for qualifications.  

Apprentices have exactly the same rights as your employees, so here’s a reminder of the employment rights that apprentices and your employees are entitled to: 

Pay: Apprentices must be paid at the right rate of pay. From 1 April 2025, the minimum wage for apprentices in the UK will be £7.55 per hour. This is the same rate as for those under 18 years old.  

  •  The minimum wage for apprentices in 2025 is the same as the minimum wage for those under 18 years old.  
  • The minimum wage for apprentices increases as they gain more experience and skills.  
  • Employers must pay their apprentices at least the minimum wage.  
  • You can check if you’re being paid correctly using the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage calculator.  

Working conditions: Apprentices have the right to a safe and healthy working environment, free from discrimination and bullying.  

Training: Apprentices are entitled to high-quality training, both on and off the job.  

Leave: Apprentices are entitled to a minimum of 20 days paid leave each year, plus bank holidays.  

Contract: Apprentices have the right to an employment contract.  

Support: Apprentices are entitled to help throughout their course in order for them to successfully complete it.  

Other rights of apprentices include:  

  • The right to join and participate in a trade union of their choice 
  • The right to maternity or paternity leave 
  • The right to statutory sick pay if they are unwell 
  • The right to protection against discrimination
