Apprenticeships are a great way to get work experience while training and studying for qualifications.
Apprentices have exactly the same rights as your employees, so here’s a reminder of the employment rights that apprentices and your employees are entitled to:
Pay: Apprentices must be paid at the right rate of pay. From 1 April 2025, the minimum wage for apprentices in the UK will be £7.55 per hour. This is the same rate as for those under 18 years old.
- The minimum wage for apprentices in 2025 is the same as the minimum wage for those under 18 years old.
- The minimum wage for apprentices increases as they gain more experience and skills.
- Employers must pay their apprentices at least the minimum wage.
- You can check if you’re being paid correctly using the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage calculator.
Working conditions: Apprentices have the right to a safe and healthy working environment, free from discrimination and bullying.
Training: Apprentices are entitled to high-quality training, both on and off the job.
Leave: Apprentices are entitled to a minimum of 20 days paid leave each year, plus bank holidays.
Contract: Apprentices have the right to an employment contract.
Support: Apprentices are entitled to help throughout their course in order for them to successfully complete it.
Other rights of apprentices include:
- The right to join and participate in a trade union of their choice
- The right to maternity or paternity leave
- The right to statutory sick pay if they are unwell
- The right to protection against discrimination
